VB-based Let's Open Doors breaking down barriers for the disabled

Let's Open Doors is now engaged in a very large public awareness campaign to reach all Virginians in support of equal access to goods and services for all citizens.

The mission of Let's Open Doors, which is Virginia Beach-based, is to support the civil right of equal access for persons with disabilities and the aging population by advocating the accessibility of all entry doors.

Our mission is multi-generational. Aging begins at birth, so parents with small children, elderly and persons with disabilities face hurtful, overly-pressured older entry doors. To manage equipment while trying to open entry doors to goods and services found on existing buildings, constructed prior to the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, causes anxiety and physical danger. We advocate the updating of entry door hardware to ADA compliant door hardware, which is low cost and readily achievable, for a socially responsible solution to accommodate those with health and age concerns.

Updating hardware on multiple doors offers a 50 percent IRS Disability Tax Credit. It's a "socially responsible" and trans-formative act by property owners. The replacement of old door hardware to ADA compliant hardware assists their tenant businesses and demonstrates integrity in doing business with clientele, accommodating their patrons' safety, dignity and independence.

We are now holding an online march for accessibility and are seeking volunteers to assist in an online email campaign of the entire state of Virginia to make people aware of potential legislation sent from the 2017 Virginia Assembly Committee on Local Governments to the Virginia Housing Commission.

We are now holding an online march for accessibility and are seeking volunteers to assist in an online email campaign of the entire state of Virginia to make people aware of potential legislation sent from the 2017 Virginia Assembly Committee on Local Governments to the Virginia Housing Commission.

Lets Open Doors will present this issue to the Virginia Housing Commission in Richmond. The commission's mandate includes older buildings and will consider the update of entry door hardware on buildings constructed prior to the 1990 American with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Any individual with an email address can exercise this civil right by signing our petition and forwarding the link to their email list or facebook and placing it on their neighborhood's nextdoor.com website.

We also need volunteers to send emails to our prepared lists of organizations throughout Virginia, to share with their members, whose disabilities, aging, healthcare and youth concerns they represent.

Volunteers should call Lets Open Doors at 757-575-5006, email letsopen4doors@gmail.com, or go to www.volunteerhr.org (Volunteer Hampton Roads' website) to sign up.
