Firefighters urge use of smoke alarms after one worked on Calm Wood

January 21, 2018

The Virginia Beach Fire Department reports that a working smoke alarm in the house on Calm Wood Place, off Holland Road near Nimmo Parkway, was a factor in alerting the occupant home at the time of the recent fire.

Studies show that the risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half where working smoke alarms are present.

Test your smoke alarm at least once a month to make sure it is working, especially if the unit runs solely on batteries.

Smoke alarms should be replaced every 10 years.
