New Linkhorn Park ES walkway combines art and literature

March 16, 2018

Outside of Linkhorn Park Elementary School there's a new walkway, made of colorful pavers recently painted and installed by Linkhorn Park students.

The work is part of a schoolwide reading project connecting art with literature, said Timothy P. Bakner, instructional technology specialist at the school.

Art Teacher Megan Mattson led a lesson with students based on the book, Only One You, by Linda Kranz, with the message being, "There's only one you in this great big world.  Make it better place." That was the students' inspiration for their designs.

Every child had the opportunity to work on the project, with more than 600 students participating, said Bakner.

More than 2,000 pavers, or paving stones, were donated to the school by the city, helping students create a walkway more than 100 feet long and about 3 ½-feet wide, leading from the sidewalk to the school's garden.
