A school division leader, Amy Cashwell is leaving VB to run Henrico County Public Schools, which educates about 50,000 students

Dr. Amy Cashwell has resigned from the Virginia Beach public school division to lead Henrico County Public Schools as its next superintendent.

She will continue to serve as Virginia Beach's chief academic officer until the end of this school year, which is next week, before heading to Henrico County, located near Richmond and serving approximately 50,000 students.

"I am incredibly honored to have this opportunity, and I look forward to building upon the legacy of excellence in Henrico County schools," said Cashwell. "Still, this is a bittersweet moment for me. VBCPS has been my 'home' for more than 20 years. The experiences I've had here first as a high school student and then later as a teacher, administrator and central office leader have been truly amazing. The talented people, plentiful programs and outstanding opportunities for VBCPS students and staff are unparalleled."

Cashwell joined the district in 1998 as a second-grade teacher, before going on to serve as an elementary school principal and, most recently, as city's chief academic officer.

"Dr. Cashwell is an exceptional leader and champion for children," said Virginia Beach division superintendent, Dr. Aaron Spence. "She is unwavering in her commitment to providing high-quality, personalized learning experiences for all students while also ensuring they have the social and emotional supports to learn and grow. Henrico families will be fortunate to have Dr. Cashwell at the helm of their schools. During her tenure with the city, she has been instrumental in the development of the division's multiple academic pathways for students, the implementation of equity initiatives and the expansion of student support services.

"She has been recognized for her leadership and vision in the school division's digital learning transformation and by the Virginia Society for Technology in Education as the 2016 Outstanding Leader of the Year," Spence continued. "In addition, the Center for Digital Education named Cashwell a 2017 Top 30 Technologists, Transformers and Trailblazers in recognition of her leadership and transformational work to personalize learning and support student success."

The search for Cashwell's replacement has already begun.
