VBPD veteran Shawn Hoffman arrested for allegedly pushing wife down stairs, he denies it, August 12 court date

Shawn Walter Hoffman, 57, a Virginia Beach police sergeant, has been arrested and charged with one count of misdemeanor assault and battery of a family member.


On June 30, 2018, at 11:48 p.m., Virginia Beach Emergency Communications received a call for an alleged domestic violence-related incident in the 2400 block of Smokehouse Road, in the Red Mill area near Princess Anne Road, Seaboard Road and Nimmo Parkway, involving a Virginia Beach police officer.


PilotOnline.com reports that he allegedly pushed his wife down a flight of stairs and she sustained injuries consistent with a fall. He denies it. There were no witnesses.

Officers were dispatched to the scene and after a preliminary investigation, Hoffman was arrested.


He is one of six sergeants assigned to the police department's Internal Affairs Division and has been with the department for 35 years.


As standard procedure, the commanding officer of the department's Internal Affairs Division has administratively reassigned and relocated Hoffman during an administrative investigation.


He was released on an unsecured bond after his arrest and he is due in court on July 12.


He faces up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
