City unveils new disaster and emergency alert warning system; must register for it

August 14, 2019

The city recently contracted with a new vendor to provide the platform for its emergency notification alert and warning system called VBAlert.

Originally launched in 2005, the system is used to disseminate information to residents and visitors who opt in and register for the service, including severe weather watches and warnings; public safety and emergency-related warnings, such as hazardous material spills; evacuations and major traffic accidents; emergency road closures and other emergency notifications.

These alerts may be sent via text, email and phone, depending on how the user wants to receive them.

Registering for the service helps citizens and visitors take immediate action and protective steps to further secure their and their family's safety.

Because of this new contract, current subscribers' personal information and passwords are not transferable.

Citizens who want to receive emergency notifications will need to register with the new system.

With the new platform, residents and visitors can also create a Smart911 profile to provide additional information to first responders, when citizens call 911.

Re-subscribe to VBAlert and create a Smart911 profile by texting VBAlert to 67283.

To sign up online or to find out more, visit www.vbgov.com/vbalert or call 311.
